Outreach

Port Hope United Church is actively involved in outreach programs in the community. We support:

NEW: River of Hope: Refugee Sponsorship:
In January 2016, our congregation voted to join with four other churches to sponsor and support a Syrian refugee family in Port Hope through the auspices of the Anglican United Refugee Alliance (AURA). River of Hope: Refugee Sponsorship plans to assist a Syrian family of five or six people for one year as they make their home in our community.

NeighbourLink Northumberland, particularly the following programs:
  • Personal Needs Cupboard - allows people with limited funds for food to pick up items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, laundry soap, Kleenex, and toilet paper.
  • Drivers for rides -supplying drivers for those who need help.
  • Meal-in-a-bag -we purchase all the ingredients for a meal (except meat) and place them in a bag along with the recipe and give them to the Salvation Army. They add the meat (ground beef) and distribute them to people in need around the county.

Fare Share Food Bank:
The first Sunday of each month is "Fare Share Sunday" - the congregation bring donations of food which are taken downstairs to the Food Bank. Click here to visit Fare Share's website.

White Gift Sunday:
On this Sunday in December, our food and monetary donations are collected in support of the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper program.

The Giving Tree:
Gifts purchased throughout Advent are delivered to Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre to help the women and children they serve.

Green Wood Dinners:
We assist in the Green Wood Coalition’s community pot luck dinners by providing a home-style meal six times a year. The community dinners are held on Wednesdays at 6 pm at St. John's Anglican Church on Pine Street and are open to anyone in need of food or social connection. Your donations of food, money and especially offers of help are always welcome.

We also actively support the Mission and Service Fund of The United Church of Canada. Our M&S goal for 2016 is $30,000.
